How do thin lenses differ from ordinary lenses?
Eyeglass lenses correct the optical error of the eyes based on the physical principle of light refraction. The power of the lens, namely dioptria, is negative for myopia, and positive for hypermetropia. For the latter, the lenses will be thinner at the edge but thick at the center.
In the case of large diopters, regular glasses can be thick, unsightly and uncomfortable because of their weight. Fortunately, researchers have discovered methods and materials to obtain thin and aesthetic lenses.
High refractive index lenses are thinner because of the more efficient light refraction compared to conventional lenses. They are lighter because the amount of material used in making them is considerably less, and they are flatter, giving a more suppler, aesthetically pleasing appearance while diminishing the effect of the enlarged or dimmed eye.
But most of the times, to obtain an impeccable view, lens thinning is not enough. In the case of large diopters, and in their case, there will still be distortions of the image on the edges due to the lens manufacturing process. To address this issue, in addition to the thinning process of the lens, in the manufacturing process, it is possible to process the lens at each point on its surface to obtain maximum comfort for the spectacle holder.
All lenses for glasses, however, have the ability to reflect light, reducing clarity especially at night or under artificial lighting conditions. Typical lenses reflect an average of about 8% of light, while thin lenses reflect twice the light. Therefore, for the best view and for a special eyewear aesthetics, it is recommended that the lens be accompanied by an antireflective treatment.
