Water and glasses
If you wear glasses or contact lenses, and you have a passion for swimming or diving, dioptria or the risks of contact lenses are no longer a problem. The solution is to wear masks or a pair of swimming glasses with the necessary correction.
For this particular type of glasses a prescription is required, different from the usual prescription for glasses due to the unique characteristics of the underwater environment. Water itself acts as a magnifying glass, and that’s why aquarium fish or other underwater objects often seem bigger than they really are. So, since the light behaves differently in the water, the optometrist or ophthalmologist needs to change the usual prescription, just to have a clear view while underwater.
In addition, depending on the diving mask or swimming glasses style, glasses prescription can be influenced because the lenses can be positioned closer or closer to the eye compared to the normal positioning of the lens for the glasses.
Diving masks
The included correction lens masks may be available in two forms: either the entire face of the mask consists of a lens, preformed for myopia or hypermetropia, in which case the diopter is equal to both eyes or the lenses are inserted separately between the mask and the eye, which offers the possibility of a more accurate correction.
Swimming glasses
Swimming glasses are much smaller and sit closer to the eye compared to a diving mask. They are designed to protect, and they should not affect speed and motion in water. The lenses are usually surrounded by a rubber or silicone gasket.
As with the diving mask, swimming glasses are available with pre-fabricated corrective lenses with the same power for both eyes. However, customized swimming goggles are a much more appropriate option because they take into account a possible difference between the two eyes.
If you are a contact lens wearer, it is preferable to take a dip or diving without wearing them because of the risk of contamination of the lenses in the underwater environment. However, if you do not want to give up, a healthier option is disposable contact lenses, which you throw away as soon as you get out of the water.
